Consider an example, with two bits, 22 = 4 conditions are possible.

Let’s take an example of a digital signal under four conditions such as amplitude, frequency, phase and voltage levels. Then the value of M will be 4 .

The mathematical equation of number of bits need to produce given no. of conditions is M-ary Equation

In this, N represents the number of bits necessary

And M represents the number of levels, conditions, or combinations possible with N bits. So, the above equation can be rearranged as: 2N=M
