PhoneGap, now known as Apache Cordova, was developed by Nitobi, a small software company based in Vancouver, Canada. The project was initially started by Nitobi in 2009. Later, in 2011, Adobe Systems acquired Nitobi, and PhoneGap became one of Adobe's open-source projects. Eventually, PhoneGap was contributed to the Apache Software Foundation and renamed Apache Cordova in 2012. The project allows developers to build mobile applications using web technologies (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) and package them as native apps for various mobile platforms.
