BIOS which stands for Basic Input & Output System. It is a program that is used by a computer to start the PC (Personal Computer) system after it's powered on. It manages the flow of data between the computer’s package (Operating System) and attached devices like the storage device, video adapter, keyboard, mouse, and printer.
Whenever you press the power button of your Personal Computer, then the first operation that is loaded in your operating system is BIOS.
Gary Kildall, an American computer scientist first timed proposed the term BIOS in 1975. After some time it will become a part of Personals Computers and was popularly used after the arrival of Microsoft’s Disk Operating System (DOS).
BIOS was a part of IBM's first Personal Computer in 1981. Within a very few years, BIOS become a strong partner of the PC.
The 4 major functions of BIOS are as follows -
POST-Its acronym is Power-on self-test. The main function of Post is to check that all hardware is in working condition when the power is supplied. If it is not done then the further procedure is done and an error message is displayed.
Bootstrap Loader - A Bootstrap Loader is a set of computer programs that loads a master software or some other OS for the personal computer after the clearness of the Poat.
BIOS Drivers- After the running of the operating system, its main work is to locate the software and give an interface with the OS for the users.
BIOS Setup or CMOS Setup - This provides a simple interface for the configuration of your computer’s hardware and CMOS (Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) is BIOS’ non-volatile memory.
BIOS is a Basic Input-Output system and it is the first software package that gets powered after the computer is turned on. And it also loads the system software in the main memory. Only because of BIOS do we get the computer interference to run our computer which is why it is necessary for Computer Systems.
It is nearly impossible to run a computer without BIOS. You have to see BIOS as the basic Operating System that interconnects the components of the Computer and permits login.
The main work of BIOS is to Instructor permit the computer to perform the basic functions like Booting or Keyboard Control. Nowadays, all modern PC( personal computer) motherboards have BIOS software.
